Crystal, I think you've heard this story before, but it seems appropriate and funny, so...

Our church has always been closely connected to the problems of homelessness, even housing a men's shelter for a while. This sometimes causes us problems, as some of our rowdier homeless guys (or mentally ill friends) will liven things up from time to time.

One day back when we had the shelter in the church building, a fella walked in not wearing a stitch of clothing.

Jeans are fine with us.

Great post. I found your site because the computer suggested it as maybe similar to my mine.

I was intrigued with Joseph's ability to forgive and show grace to his brothers and he didn't even have the love of Jesus as an example or the indwelling of the Holy Spirit to assist him. What a man. Check it out and let me know.

sigh.. yes. I made real bread for our communion service tonight....it was so delightful to have that instead of those dry flat bland white disks....that look nothing like food or body...the body of Christ.

Hi, I'm Teri. I'm a Christian woman, United Methodist in flavor, from Wisconsin. I am relatively new to blogging and am trying to find more faith-cites to put on my blog roll. I came across yours. Thanks. I totally agree. I look at my own life and really want to give more. I've seen the church in this light, too. I'll be back. Thank you. I pray the same prayer with you.

Blessings.

How many people stay away from church because of deep shame? How few feel that they can really bring "warts and all" to church with them?

I also grew up in a time and place where I was taught that we wore our "Sunday best" to show respect for God and God's house--but I am trying to let go of that, insofar as not putting that expectation onto anyone else.

You should submit this to your denominational magazine or something. Very well thought out!

I can't wait to steal your idea for children's time!!!!

Funny the doors that open for church-going. For me it was realizing I could write a check to put in the offering plate. Something about cash always bothered me.

I hide my casual clothes under the robes too. But, I also think this issue is complicated. I know brothers and sisters who grew up where church was the only place they could be "somebody" and have some "say so". Dressing up for church was the only place they could be seen like that. So me thinks as always, the issue is contextual.

Glad you are writing again.

Amen!!

In our little church, we can always identify the visitors because they are the ones wearing dresses and ties. We are VERY casual (I'm usually the only one in a skirt actually) and before long, the visitors who continue attending eventually remove the jacket and tie and kick back with the rest. My sense has always been that folks find it refreshing not to have to put on what feels like a facade to walk through the doors of the church.
